Viagra

Viagra (sildenafil) is a very popular drug used to treat impotence in men. Viagra is effective in treating erectile dysfunction (ED), but it can have dangerous side effects including vision loss, hearing loss, and heart attack. In successfully resolving ED Viagra may also mask a symptom of a more serious underlying health problem.

How Viagra Works

Viagra is a phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE5) inhibitor. PDE5 inhibitors relax the smooth muscles in the penis allowing for the increased blood flow necessary for erection. Viagra has not been approved for use in women.

Viagra Dangers

Viagra can cause serious and deadly side effects including:

  • Dangerously low blood pressure
  • Irregular heart beat
  • Stroke
  • Heart attack
  • Vision loss
  • Sudden hearing loss
  • Priapism (erection that lasts for four hours or more)

Viagra and Heart Medication

Viagra should never be used with nitrate drugs, including nitroglycerin often used for heart conditions and “poppers” used recreationally. The combination can cause a sudden drop in blood pressure which can be so severe as to be fatal.

Vision Loss

Viagra has been linked to “eye strokes”. Non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) occurs when the blood supply to the optic nerve is blocked or reduced. NAION can cause sudden vision loss in one or both eyes. NAION vision loss can include loss of peripheral vision, loss of vision quality, or total blindness.

Viagra is also known to cause a temporary blue tint to vision and light sensitivity.

Hearing Loss

In 2007, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) required changes to the Viagra label to warn users that the drug may cause hearing loss. The agency had received 29 reports of sudden hearing loss with Viagra use.

Since then a study, published in the Archives of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, found that men taking Viagra were twice as likely to experience hearing loss as those who were not taking PDE5 inhibitors.

Priapism

Priapism is a painful erection lasting four hours or more. It occurs when blood flows into the penis and cannot flow back out. This causes a lack of oxygen to the tissues which can result in permanent injuries including formation of scar tissue and loss of function. Priapism is a medical emergency.
