Pain

Pain medications are an important part of medical care. They make procedures possible that would otherwise be unbearable. They can dramatically improve quality of life for some. Doctors now know that uncontrolled pain can cause serious medical harm and even death. However, some pain medication can have very dangerous an even fatal side effects.

Pain Medications

Examples of pain medications which can cause injury and death include:

Overdose

Some pain medications are also powerful central nervous system (CNS) depressants. These are the type that causes the classic overdose that people normally think of concerning pain pills. This often occurs when the drugs are mixed with alcohol, but some drugs, like Darvon, can cause an overdose very easily when victims think they are using the medication as directed.

Overdose can also be fatal or deadly when it causes liver toxicity. Tylenol is very toxic to the liver, and people do not always realize how much acetaminophen they are taking because it is found in so many combination products.

Topical Anesthetics

Topical anesthetics, including creams, gels, sprays, and even throat lozenges, seem safe and harmless. However, the side effects can be fatal. Topical anesthetics are sold over-the-counter (OTC), in prescription form, and are used in medical settings.

Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs

NSAIDs, such as ibuprofen, the active ingredient in Advil, are sold in prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) form. They may be packaged alone or in formulations such as cold symptom relief medications. NSAIDs are even sold in children’s formulas.

Unfortunately, NSAIDs can have very dangerous side effects including:

  • Steven Johnson Syndrome, a life-threatening and disfiguring allergic reaction
  • Ulcers
  • Kidney injury
  • Heart attack
  • Stroke
