Hydroxycut

Hydroxycut is an over-the-counter (OTC) dietary supplement marketed as a weight loss aid. Hydroxycut maker, Iovate Health Sciences, voluntarily recalled 14 Hydroxycut products in May, 2009, after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning urging consumers to stop using the products due to reports of 23 cases of liver problems associated with Hydroxycut use, including one which required liver transplant and one which was fatal.

Hydroxycut Dangers

Hydroxycut has been linked to several serious and potentially fatal health problems including:

  • Liver damage
  • Liver failure
  • Cardiovascular disorders
  • Seizures
  • rhabdomyolysis

Rhabdomyolysis is rapid breakdown of muscle tissue which releases a toxic protein into the bloodstream and can cause kidney damage or kidney failure.

Hydroxycut Recall

The following Hydroxycut products were recalled in 2009:

  • Hydroxycut Regular Rapid Release Caplets
  • Hydroxycut Caffeine-Free Rapid Release Caplets
  • Hydroxycut Hardcore Liquid Caplets
  • Hydroxycut Max Liquid Caplets
  • Hydroxycut Regular Drink Packets
  • Hydroxycut Caffeine-Free Drink Packets

  • Hydroxycut Liquid Shots
  • Hydroxycut Hardcore RTDs (Ready-to-Drink)

The recall was not the end of Hydroxycut. Some of the products were reformulated with different ingredients and are on the market today.

Liver Damage Study

A study published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology in January, 2010, analyzed 17 cases of Hydroxycut users who experienced liver damage. Only nine of the cases in the study had been reported to the FDA. The researchers found that the likelihood that the patients’ liver damage was caused by Hydroxycut use was:

  • Greater than 95% in eight patients
  • 75% to 95% in five cases
  • 50% to 74% in two cases
  • May have been linked in two cases

Symptoms of Liver Failure

Hydroxycut products were reformulated, but it is not clear which ingredient or ingredients in Hydroxycut caused liver injuries in the first place. Signs that you may be experiencing liver failure include:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Weakness
  • Fatigue
  • Itching
  • Pale stools
  • Dark urine
  • Jaundice – yellowing of whites of the eyes and/or skin
