Heart, Blood Pressure and Cholesterol

Drug Injury Lawyer

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) heart disease is the leading cause of death in the U.S., topping cancer. Everywhere you turn you see and advertisement for a supposedly heart-healthy product. It is no wonder there are so many drugs aimed at this market and that so many turn out to be dangerous.

Statins

Statins are the  most prescribed type of drug of all time. They are also very controversial. Statins can cause very serious side effects and they can kill you. There has been a big push to get doctors to prescribe statins to people who show absolutely no signs of needing a cholesterol-lowering drug. Some doctors and health experts say that cholesterol is not the real cause of heart attack and stroke and that statins have no health benefits whatsoever.

Examples of statins include:

Blood Thinners

Anticoagulants, also known as anti-clotting drugs or blood thinners, prevent the formation of blood clots. Blood clots can travel to the lungs, block blood flow to the heart, or block blood flow to the brain. Blood thinners prevent heart attack and stroke and can save lives.

Blood thinners can also be deadly. Because they prevent coagulation, they can cause deadly bleeding events, including:

  • Internal bleeding
  • Bleeding in the brain
  • Gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Excessive bleeding after trauma

Examples of blood thinners include:

ACE Inhibitors

ACE inhibitors are used to treat high blood pressure. They can cause birth defects in the babies of women who take them during pregnancy. High blood pressure during pregnancy can be dangerous for the mother and the baby, so simply stopping the use of an ACE inhibitor is not always the solution.

More women of childbearing age are taking ACE inhibitors now. It is believed that rising obesity rates and the fact that women are waiting until later in life to have children may contribute to the high number of women taking these drug when they become or try to become pregnant.
